I have a couple of cashmere polo sweaters that I purchased last winter. I've taken excellent care of them but it's time for more than just a spot cleaning. The instructions are to hand wash and flat dry.

Are there any fool proof techniques for hand washing cashmere?

Loro Piana sells a cashmere soap that works really well and smells nice.

Scam. Probably just some gentle shampoo like johnsons baby shampoo (or something like that). Heck...cashmere is ANIMAL HAIR.

Use Dr. Bonners or Woolite.
Cashmere is tough actually (meaning is not as fragile as you think).
Just make sure you reshape when drying.
Heat will shrink it.
Wash inside out.

If using a normal hair shampoo, would using a hair conditioner with it have any effect on the cashmere?

IMO:

Eucalan > Johnson's Baby Shampoo > Woolite

Dr. Bronner's is just north of me in Escondido, CA. But, I've never tried his soap on cashmere.

http://www.eucalan.com/ The best prices are Amazon or eBay, but it's available most everywhere.

I always wondered that. I use those hotel conditioning shampoos to handwash.

Cashmere is fragile in terms of rubbing. ALWAYS use a wash bag, like for ladies underwear.
I always wash my cashmere in the machine, low heat(NO HEAT), LOW RPM 400-600rpm. Usually art of a wool program. NO tumble or heat. I use Woollite (minuscule amounts)

Lay flat of a dry clean terry cloth towel, with the appropriate shaping of the garment.
I use a raised and ventilated support above the heated bathroom floor.
