If one wanted to taper the back but leave the hair long enough so that no scalp is showing, would guard would you use? Or is this cut only possible with scissors? Thanks

are you cutting your own hair? if so, just use the longest possible guard and continue to smaller and smaller guards until you get the desired effect...

I think it depends on your hair. For mine it can be quite short and not show scalp, but for someone with, for example, Asian hair that likes to stick straight out, it needs to be longer to lay down.

So yeah, start with the long guard. Personally I prefer the look of scissor cut hair anyway, it's not as perfect looking.

Go over your head with a thinning shears once you've used the clipper to get rid of the "perfect looking" thing.

Most clipper sets should go up to 1" which is plenty long enough not to see scalp. You could probably go as short as 5/8", depending on the color and texture of your hair.

I use the largest guard (#4 or 1/2"). Starting from the neck or sides by ears with the guard flat side down, I gradually lift/angle the shears up as I move towards the crown of my head. Near the crown, the only thing touching my scalp are the points of the guard. To touch up around my ears, I hold the shears parallel to the floor with the flat bottom of the guard at an angle or diagonal to the side of my head. Confusing?
