Haircut Advice - Thick, Poofy, annoying

Any tips for my hair? I want to have it parted, and messy, or some variation of that. I'm thinking I should just ask for all over layers? My hair is thick and poofs out (especially on the sides - big time when short) when I get out of the shower and dry it. It naturally wants to do what's in the pic below, but I'm not interested in being in a boy band...

I usually style with bumble/bumble products but it's still not what I want..

Any tips for getting it to lay flat instead of it poofing out? At the end of the day, or when I wake up the next day, my hair is much lighter and easier to mess around with, but it's greasy the next morning usually, so I can't just go without washing it.

What about styles, any other recommendations besides the part/messy look I was thinking? I've grown it out now so I think I've got more to work with, but my hair dresser has told me before she can't trim the sides without trimming the top too, which I'm not totally sure about. So I need to know what I should ask for specifically, layers, etc.

Also, if you can't tell from the pic, I have a big cow lick in the front, so that's why I'm partial to going for a part, but the way it's cut now my hair just goes over in a big clump - can't give it any style, make it stand up, etc. Any tips would be great.

Just ask for something shaggy. choppy, and layered. It'll be an improvement.

Go to a different hair stylist. Get some fresh blood in there.

Here's an example of how I try and style it now, you can see how it all kind of just clumps together at the side and just doesn't really do anything.

It looks like you have a receding hairline. If that is the case, I'd just accept it and go with a much shorter haircut. If not, the picture is deceiving. Let the back and sides fill in.

It's pretty long, it's over my ears, I think it may look that way because the of the part. I don't think it's receding, but the cow lick causing it to part if i brush it back that way.

Thought I'd update with my haircut. I'm still not satisfied...she layered the sides but said she couldn't take much more off because of how long it was on top..said it wouldn't look right. Also said it wouldn't look right if some of it didn't stay over my ears...thoughts?

It still clumps to one side, still does basically the same thing. Can't the sides be taken in more? I tried to get her to chop/layer the top but she was saying it should stay long? I don't get it. Advice/suggestions definitely appreciated.

looks better ... two things i recommend are monthly haircuts, and always go to the same person if your hair is difficult in any way. the person will learn to cut your hair over time and in a few months you'll have someone who is basically trained to cut your hair. results will improve a lot.

Yeah I've been going to the same person for years. I just wish it were choppier and shorter on the sides...but she says it isn't possible..

Anyone with experience with leave-in conditioner?

Looks much better. Personally, I would put in a bit more product on back of the top of your head to give it a bit of lift / texture.

How often do you wash your hair? If you let the natural oils do there thing then you might have more control. For example, I found that my hair looks its best when I only use tiny amount shampoo/conditioner a few times a week.

Also, try different hairstyles while your hair is drying. For me, combing my all my hair towards the back makes it very straight when I style it forward after it dries. You might have different results but I would suggest experimenting because you never know what will work.

From your pictures I can tell you that your hairline is definitely not moving to reseda any time soon.

Here's the best advice anyone can give you............86 your hairstylist! She obviously doesn't know what she's doing. Where do you go to cut your hair, anyways....Supercuts? Magic Sams?

Your hairstylist is obviously a third rate hair dresser on the cheap......see if you can find a barber or a male hairstylist who's not too flamboyant that can give you a good conservative cut.

Drop the messy on top idea....that style went out with the fauxhawk a few years ago. Grow your hair on top to give it volume, then cut the back and sides short and clean. Keep the front long so you can part it on the side, and use product to give it hold. The trick is in getting that triangle shape on the crown so you can get that cool late 40's/50's effect.

100% better. Leave in conditioner is good, so is the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle for $4. Put it in your hair while showering, then run a wide toothed comb through your hair to cover all the strands and rinse it out after...3 minutes. You can't use it every day - too thick, but it'll keep your hair really moisturized regardless.

I think the problem is the way your hair stick up in the front right and folds over ur forehead, looks unnatural. If u use some product to paste it down a little more, so your hair is flatter on ur forhead it'll look better
