Every once in a while I really look at j's avatar and it blows my mind.

Hairspray for the roots and the shape and a little bit of paste type gel on the ends for spikiness.

A better question might be: How long do you want to work to get this look? That looks very labor-intensive.

I was serious - my friend used to do the top thing to his hair, only crazier, sometimes and he would use a bit of watered-down Elmer's glue. It took him like 3 minutes, maybe less.

The first look is obviously quite different from the second. The first is short on the sides (and back) with much longer lengths on the top (probably different lengths) and would really just require some gel, and if you want it to stay in that shape throughout the day, some firm hair spray (maybe some blow drying?). It's high maintenance (sp) (IMO).

The second is really just a short haircut, color, and gel, strong pomade, and sunglasses.

IMO, high maintenance is out.

The first look is more sprayed than gelled.

Elmer's glue isn't nearly as scary as it sounds. It's water soluble and dries fairly quickly. You just have to stand in the shower for a few minutes and it'll come right out.

You could also use some unflavored gelatin (blow dry it cold, hot just makes it melt).
