Had my first shave with a Badger brush today

also, i heard that if you have a very tough beard, the cheaper brushes are more effective than the silvertip badger. this makes sense since the cheaper bristles are less flexible and should do a better job of lifting tough hairs.

Is the Silvertip worth that much more? Is Art of Shaving the only place to get a silvertip?

the price depends a lot on the size of the brush, not just the type.

the best prices i've seen on silvertip brushes are at em's place.

Kent offers shaving badger brushes (grey & silvertip) at reasonable prices. As for the smell, make sure you shake out excess water when you're done & get one of those drying stands that hangs the brush 'bristles down'.

Isn't there a standard size brush? The Art of Shaving ones look very similar to many of the ones I've seen above, like Penhaligon's.

How does that compare with Art of Shaving stuff?

I've never tried AoS - if I recall correctly, RJMan once said that AoS is simply rebadged Taylor's at a hefty premium.

Art of Shaving is way over priced, and may brand you as a parvenu

Kent was a great suggestion; won't knock your socks off, but fair priced. I alternate between a Trumper's Brush and a Simpson. I think the Simpson is the better brush. By the way, Trumpers reverses the top two grades from what all the other companies do (e.g.; best is super and super is best . . . or something like that). Has anybody examined, used, or repaired a Plisson brush?
