Hackett suits fit

I've tried on two Hackett suits that I really liked but I have some reservations regarding sizing.

The jackets fit me fine although they do need to be brought in around the waist. The only issue I had was when raising my arms the jackets dug into my shoulders/biceps. I drive a lot so I will be in that position often so that is an issue for me.

The other problem I had was that you have to go with a 6 inch drop. The 38 trousers that come with the 44 were very tight around my thighs. They did say they can let them out around the thighs but that will only add an inch.
to complicate matters, I'm back at the gym lifting weights so a particular concern of mine is that I add size to my thighs very quickly so within 3-4 months I'll be back in the same position of the trousers being too tight and no more fabric left to let them out.
I'd feel more comfortable going for larger trousers but then the jacker one size up would be too big for me.

Long term I have some reservations about how long the jackets will last as well. Over the last few years I've gone from 38 to now 44. I'm left with 3 x 42 jackets that barely fit now. These suits are quite expensive. I'm reluctant to buy them and then have to stick them on eBay a year later for a fraction of the cost because they are too small.

Should I take the risk on these Hackett suits or find something cheaper in the meantime to tide me over until I get to a size I settle on?

Don't buy things you know you'll grow out of. Also, I wouldn't buy from anyone who will not arrange a different size of trousers to the jacket.

Also, trousers wear out VERY quickly if they are tight around the thigh, I've gone through wool trousers in less than 6 months. So wait. Or go for MTM where you can actually get things with some room to grow where you know you'll grow.

Sound advice. Thank you. Yeah, one of the trousers is flannel and the sales lady was saying to wear it infrequently otherwise it will wear out. I can imagine having them too tight around the thighs will exacerbate that

I am not sure what Hackett is like now but the last time I visited, 5 years ago or so, I found the 'style' a bit too slim. You have more better options at that price. May I ask where you based? People could recommend other shops.

I’m in London. I usually go with Hawes and Curtis or Charles tyrwitt but Hackett are having a sale and the suits cost about the same as Hawes and Curtis so I thought might as well go for Hackett. But you like you say they are quite slim. There were two other suits I tried on and the trousers felt liked tights. My girlfriend said it left nothing to the imagination. I didn’t fancy that look.

These are the two I liked. On the model the pinstripe seems to have plenty of leg room. Not so for me.

I find the new Hackett to short..Even in the L sizes the jackets look like they have been shrunk on you. Same thing with the new CT , used to have some of their older stuff now only buy chinos form them .

I ordered the two suits online to try them on again. Once again the jackets were a decent fit. The trousers however were worse this time. The taupe ones felt like they were cutting off circulation to my legs. It was an effort to sit down. I was hesitant to bend down to pick up my laptop for fear of ripping them. The pinstripe was only slightly better. Not even adding an inch around the thighs would make these wearable.

I'm considering getting a 46 for the larger trousers but then I suspect I will be swimming in the jacket.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
