Guy Only Movies/Humour

I was with a group of friends the other night and we popped in "Wedding Crashers." While we were watching I noticed that during some of the jokes all the guys would laugh hysterically and the girls wouldn't even chuckle. That got me thinking, what movies or humour in general is something that groups of guys find hysterical and women don't?

One of the best examples I can think of is a scene in 40 Year Old Virgin. When Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, etc. are breaking florescent light tubes in a loading dock. I think that is something usually only guys would see the humour in.

I think the movie Airplane and Stripes are 2 movies that pretty much only guys would find funny. I really enjoyed Wedding Crashers and know a lot of girls who don't think it is that funny.

I find most modern comedy films to be too vulgar, both in the sense of coarseness but especially in being plebeian. I prefer more subtle humor, in the vein of American Beauty or the films by the Coen brothers.

What about Wes Anderson?

His films are stylish as well.

I like his later work more, though The Life Aquatic borders on slapstick in certain parts. You are right about the stylishness, perhaps more so than any other contemporary director. In certain circles it has become fashionable to dislike Wes Anderson.

I always thought the opening scene in Reservoir Dogs was pretty typical of how guys talk to and joke with each other when women aren't around (perhaps not with the same "Tarantino" cadence and tough talk, but with similar themes and language).

Weird that you guys mention Wes Andersen only tangentially. I've noticed that most girls didn't find Rushmore even remotely funny.

I think Old School and movies like that cater to the most moronic portion of society, and 99% of the people who watch those movies are big nerds who never did that kind of stuff. Funny enough, the people I know who live their lives similarly or even more crazy than Tucker Max don't find movies like Wedding Crashers funny at all.

I agree that subtle comedy is much funnier.

I would agree with you as well. However, there is a time and place for everything. I really enjoy, and come back to more often, "highbrow" comedy. In that vein I would highly recommend Tristham Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story. However, every once and awhile I like to engage my brain in a different way (some would say "turn off"). I find films like 40 Year Old Virgin/Swingers/et al to be absolutly hiliarious and in the case of 40 Year Old Virgin surprisingly endearing. As the hackneyed phrase goes, variety is the spice of life.

It's not low brow in the slap stick sense or making potty jokes... most of it is actually extremely corny and embarrasing. Like in wedding crashers - the rules of wedding crashing... I could see the monty python do something funny with it, but the way they did it was pathetic. I'm sorry but all those types of movies just give me the mental image of a bunch of balding, pot bellied office rats in Dockers and tucked in golf shirts they got for $9.99 sitting around a table drinking budweiser while their wives are off shopping - trading off "hilarious" lines from movies like that and using phrases in real life situations. To me it's depressing, like socks and sandals.
