Thanks JLibourel, I am going to take that as quite a complement coming from you! Pics:

I am going to sell it because my .22 needs are covered by an Officers Model Special, but it was fun shooting for a bit!

For my birthday coming up in a couple months, I think I want to get my first gun. I know it's all about feel in hand, how the gun shoots for me, what I intend on using it for, and trying out enough guns to know what I want, but anyone have any suggestions as to how to get the process rolling? Should I just show up to a local range/store and tell them, "Here I am, I want to buy my first handgun, what now?" Should I read anything first? Take shooting lessons before I take a CCW class?

    Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you really want a handgun, though I would suggest starting on a rimfire rifle.

    Start here: http://www.amazon.com/Gun-Digest-Bo...5254/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1324500842&sr=8-4

    And also maybe this: http://www.amazon.com/Best-Defense-Season-1/dp/B002T04NDE/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1324500994&sr=8-6

Ignore 99% of what you read on the Internet until you have some basic experience with which to view other people's opinions with a critical eye and a sense of perspective.

Do an NRA-type firearms safety and shooting course

Once you have narrowed what you are looking for down to a shortlist of handguns or handgun types, go to the range a few times to rent them and see how they feel.

    Buy a home handgun safe

Don't worry about the concealed carry permit until you are very comfortable carrying, safely handling and shooting whatever you opt for.

One more pic for sizing reference:

OAL is a smidge over 27" with the 16" barrel attached.

Correct - it's a semi-auto Steyr AUG, which is very similar to the F88C Austeyr that was entering service in the ADF just as I was leaving.

Anyone have any experience with the Ruger SR9c? I'm a great fan of Ruger products and it fits great in my hand. Anyone here get to shoot one?

My two year anniversary gift to my wife. She loves it, and we put about 600 rounds through it a few weeks ago.

Nice! I've thought about getting one of those myself.

It is a lot of fun, and apparently there is a large modding community for the gun.

I'm planning on getting a lot of shooting time in at the range this next semester, so I'm going to need a lot of ammo. Does anyone have a recommendation for bulk .223/5.56 that's brass case and as cheap as possible without being corrosive? I'm looking for about 1000 rounds.
