Not to be pedantic, but the belief that people can choose to be gay does not deny the idea that people are born that way.

I realize that current dogma holds that homosexuality is an immutable, biologically pre-determined condition. Nonetheless, I can't help believing there is an element of volition in many cases. One often hears the platitude that no-one would choose to be gay. However, cases where men and women have effectively functioned in hetero-land--married, raised children, etc.--only to "come out" in their late 40s or early 50s seem pretty common. (I think of the father of "Taliban John" as a good case in point. I strongly suspect having his dad go gay helped turn the poor kid into a jihadist wacko.) I can understand 50 or 60 years ago--back when the homosexual was a hated outcast, abhorred alike of God and man--gay people trying to live a lie, using a facade of hetero normalcy to conceal their homosexuality, either repressed or clandestine. The ill-fated Sen. Larry Craig would probably be a good example of the latter. However, at least in "enlightened" communities, the odium against homosexuals had pretty well crumbled over 30 years ago. People have far less incentive to conceal their gay natures. Taliban John's father lived in bloody Berkeley, for chrissake!

We don't talk about just "gay and lesbian" anymore--it's "LGBT." The guy I was describing had a voracious fondness for heterosexual pornography (soft-core stuff like girly magazines, anyway) when I knew him, and I later met a guy who had known him in college who said he had plastered his room with photos from second-rate girly magazines. My informant thought it was pretty gross. My ex-schoolmate was later married to a beautiful woman for a number of years, so evidently he was able to function as a heterosexual. Evidently he must have had some bi-sexual tendencies, and after his wife ditched him, he evidently segued from "B" to "G." Thus, even though it may be currently unfashionable, it remains my conviction that, at least in many cases, homosexuality does involve an element of choice and volition. I think women can often work both sides of the street more easily than men--look at Ann Heche for example. Ellen DeGeneres' ex-paramour is now, I think, married and a mommy. I also think no few men are opportunistically homosexual. They may prefer women, but in all-male environments (boarding school, prison, etc.) they will turn to gay action for gratification, only to revert to prefering women in the outside world.

He should think about opening his own site and charging fees, it seems as though the Appreciation aggregator sites do fairly well. I think this young man may have a future.

And FWIW - I think its certainly possible to choose to be gay, but I think it's a pretty small minority of "gay" people who do so.

And really, was Jan's friend actually gay or was he just living a hedonistic lifestyle that valued pleasure above all else - no matter the sex of the other person or people involved in his activities?
