Growing my hair

As the title says, I want to grow my hair. However, the problem I've encountered in the past is that when I try to grow it within 3 or 4 months it's awkward to comb. Because normally I spike it up but once I grow it it's too long too spike but too short to slick back. And I can't not comb it because when I go to places like clubs, work, school, etc. I don't want to look messy or w.e. Any ideas on like a transitional hairstyle?

I would also like some information on this, it's been about 4 or 5 months and my hair looks very shaggy/frizzy/dry.

It's pretty hard to avoid looking a little sloppy when growing out your hair. I've been growing out my hair since September and it's finally starting to look good. My previous two attempts at growing out my hair lasted around three months because I couldn't handle the transitional phase.

It's hard to just not get a haircut for a year. You should probably go to a hair stylist(not a barber or quick cuts person) and let them know what you're trying to do. They don't have to cut any length off, but sometimes you need to maybe thin it out a bit and take out some of the uneven edges and set it up for growing out. Just let them know that you're trying to grow it out and not to take out any length.

For daily maitenence, use a good conditioner when you shampoo. Also, if you shower every day but don't actually get gross and sweaty from playing basketball like i do, you probably don't need to shampoo your hair every time. It seems weird to americans because of our obsession with showering but it's not neccessary or reccomended to shampoo every day. Every 2-3 days is more than enough unless you play sports or work up a big sweat.

Also, get a decent leave in conditioner or something like paul mitchell smoothing serum that i have used and like a lot for hard to manage hair. When your hair is still damp from a shower, put a bit on your hand and just spread it through your hair and style. I style with my hand and haven't touched a comb in forever, but that stuff is pretty good and can be found at salon places like Sally's and even at target in their fancy hair section.
