Growing a beard with dignity

Hello,

I'm considering growing a beard for winter, just to try it out if nothing else. What's kept me from doing so already is my concern about the growing process itself-- two weeks san shave can look pretty sloppy, even with neck-shaving.

So, my question is: is there a dignified approach to the growing process? How do I go about it without looking homeless?

Thanks much.

Stick with a Navy cut beard until its really grown in, then you can go into other styles if you want.
Keep the neck and cheekbone clean.
Invest in a good hair trimmer (the kind your barber uses) so the length stays short and even.
make sure your dress appearance is cleaner than it normally would be so people dont think you are a slouch.
keep your skin clean and free of oil.

There was a rule at my former employer that went something like this...you can have a beard...you just can't grow one.

Do it while on you're on a couple of weeks "relaxed" vacation where you or no-one else cares.

Just trim the edges on your cheeks and neck with a razor

What is a navy cut?

I've been growing my beard for two weeks, but have to go back to the office Monday. If I don't get this looking better before then, I'm going to have to shave it. The beard is growing in ok, but it just isn't connecting between the mustache and beard (were a horse shoe would be). Any suggestions?

That's a good technical solution from specialblend right there, though anyone wanting to grow their beard could just simply do it in a period where they're on vacation, or taking advantage of some days off in this past holiday season
