Grey suit, gingham shirt, knit tie?

I am graduating next Saturday and I was hoping to get some insight about what to wear. I have to attend a little ceremony before the actual graduation, hence the suit, but I was hoping to keep it a little casual looking. Here are the basics: I have a modern cut charcoal suit and I was hoping to pair it with a blue gingham dress shirt from J Crew and a solid blue knit tie. I've never worn a knit tie before so I'm not sure if it is appropriate for a graduation setting. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
