Grey Dress Trousers or Chinos w/ a Navy SC?

I'm in the process of trying to find my "style" and have just picked up my first SC. I'm shopping around for some trousers to go with it, and am looking for a little direction, specifically in terms of dressiness & texture.

I have a bright navy SC (Image 1) that I'm planning to pair with some light grey trousers. I've found a couple of options that I think would work, but I'm a little unsure with which way to go. The SC is hopsack and has a texture to it (Image 2).

I found some decent dress trousers (Image 3) that also have a 'boxy' texture to them (Image 4); but it's quite a bit of a "tighter" texture. I think they go together, but I could be wrong. I'm also not sure if maybe I should be aiming for a more casual bottom.

I found some light grey chinos (Image 5) with a very similar color, but they don't appear to have much of a texture and appear 'smooth'. Obviously they would be more casual as well. I think the 'smoothness' would potentially pair nicer with the jacket.

In terms of quality, I don't know much about the chinos, but they're about half the price (regular) than the dress trousers (which the fabric is from guabello).

To put it into perspective, I'll be going downtown Toronto this early summer to see Les Miserables and I would like to dress in something along these lines (possibly exactly this). I was thinking of an OCBD without a tie, and some brown shoes. I'm open to any suggestions or advice. Thanks!

I'm not a big fan of grey chinos in general as they don't have a texture or finish and just seem super plain. I'd go with the wool ones of these two. Similar to DWW's comment perhaps a tan chino would work if you'd like as opposed to this grey.

Oops. I was trying to put something together for the spring/summer, but I just realized this jacket is way too thick for warm weather.

Thanks for the advice - I'll steer clear of the light grey chinos, and try not to overthink it too much, except I'll be paying a lot more attention to fabric weight now.

I'm going to need another jacket already. Would a lighter hopsack be okay for the summer, or should I be sticking to the cottons & linens? I'm trying to build a wardrobe, so I'll need something versatile.

I reckon either option is more or less unimpeachable if you get the fit right.

If you’re looking for a lightweight version, I got a navy hopsack blazer with brown corozo buttons from Suitsupply. It has a welted chest pocket and patch hip pockets. Lightweight wool and unlined, it has to be one of the most versatile warm weather jackets.

Hopsack is fine for summer, so long as it's a weight and weave that's comfortable for you.

I have this exact SC, and it's going to work just fine for Toronto summer. If you wait few weeks, the same vendor will have VBS fresco trousers in light or mid grey - do not miss those, they are great for summer.

Have yet to try a 3-button. Not sure how they work on me, I have a barrel-chested 'problem'. Might actually help though, I'll have to try one on.

I don't know much about it, but this one is 375 gsm and seems high by comparison. I can always try.

Good to know. I'll keep an eye out for those. As for the SC; I see they had two versions. a 265 gsm & a 375 gsm. I assume you have the 265? I have the 375, and I'm guessing that's too heavy for summer. Although I'm just learning - so I could be wrong if you're referring to the heavier fabric.

The best is to always ask the company you're purchasing from. Assuming they're good, they should be able to advise you. 375 is on the high side for a summer garment, but the weave is more important than the weight.

Grey cotton trousers just look off. Too plain and lifeless.

I did not realize it is 375 gsm, it does not feel that heavy. The weave is pretty open.

This is great news for you though - now you have a legitimate opportunity to add a lighter-weight SC. For example...
