I was wondering which company makes for a better shoe. I have both Grensons and C & J. I would say leather wise, the C & J are softer and the construction of the shoe is a bit better then Grenson. Does anyone know the reason for Paul Stuart to pick Grenson over C & J?

Speculating of course, but as C&J also makes for Brooks Bros. and RL Polo possibly their production capacity was taxed. It's also probable that PS wanted to offer something different than Brooks and Polo.

And maybe Grenson gave them a better deal.

Grenson is also a bit more upmarket. The Masterpieces are ~ $600 and the C&J handgrade are around $500. They also offer many many more styles - they make dozens of styles for Paul Stuart. And they really are sort of a cheaper Edward Green, right down to the identical sole. (I honestly can hardly tell the quality difference, aside from superior EG antiquing)

Excellent, I figure that would be the answer when it all boils down.

Actually, Grenson Masterpieces are quite a bit cheaper than C&J Handgrades over here in the UK.

The price point for the C&J handgrades has increased rather significantly (no doubt also in part because of the weak dollar). [IMG] koji

I would imagine that C&J's upper leather isn't softer, their interlinings are. I wouldn't be surprised if the leather that C&J and Grenson use is sourced from the same tannery.

You can find Grenson Masterpieces for slightly less than C&J Handgrades, so it seems reasonable that Grensons are slightly less expensive at wholesale. In addition, Paul Stuart likes to do some mildly eccentric (or even non-so-mildly eccentric) things with their shoes, and it's possible that Grenson is more open to that than C&J is.

I believe that is probably correct, like I said earlier, there are countless unique designs that Grenson does just for PS.

One thing I've been wondering about..

I know that one of the key differences between C&J's handgrade and regular lines is that handgrades feature a hidden channel sole.

Do Grenson Masterpieces also have a hidden channel?

C&J Handgrades are around £320 online - same price as in their shops in London.  C&J regular line shoes are around £220. Grenson Masterpieces: around £240 around £245 I think Pediwear used to have them for around £280.
