Hey everyone,
I made an impulsive buy today and bought a green gingham tommy hilfiger shirt to wear with my suits to work. When I got home I realized I had no idea what tie would go with it. I have a navy suit that I thought would go well. I have a few green ties but they just don't do it for me with the shirt. I have a solid navy blue tie. Would that work? I'm typically pretty conservative with my tie and shirt combos. I always have the tie match the color of the shirt in some way.

I would love to hear your feedback. I know there's a lot of experts here.

Thanks in advance

Brad

This is not conservative. Done badly, it's kind of tacky. Done well, it's a limiting approach. That navy tie is about the best thing you're going to find. I'm not really a fan of really bold shirts with conservative suits, but they're having a moment right now.

Do not wear that shirt with a suit. Ever.

Only ginghams I think you can get away with with a suit is probably a small scale navy/pink gingham.

Definitely not a large check BRIGHT GREEN gingham.

The shirt is also probably worn best without a tie. It should be worn as a sport shirt.

Thanks YYR. This shirt definitely is out of the norm of what I usually buy. That being said would you think a dark green solid tie might be a safer choice? Thanks

No, I think that would be a really bad choice. Different shades of green don't always play well together. I'm inclined to partially agree with JRD -- though it could be good with a tan cotton suit.

I've done a dark green knit with light green gingham before to good effect. It is a hard shirt to pull off, but that one works. Brown is a fairly safe option as well.

If you wanna wear this shirt with a suit and tie you definitely should opt for a more casual suit (certainly not a navy or charcoal worsted, but rather something like a beige linen or cotton) and also a more casual tie like a dark navy or dark brown knit tie.

Thanks everyone. I've decided to wear it on casual Fridays at work with jeans and a sport coat. Maybe a tan or blue one. I'll go pick one up today.
