Though much of the "San Francisco" shown is created inside a computer.

Bishop recently brought my attention to this, and it is truly astounding the amount and scope of the CGI present in that film. There are literally some scenes (pretty much every night exterior shot in the film) where everything but the actors and maybe a car are composite CGI.

Bishop seemed to care. I'm under the impression that if one cannot actually tell that CGI is present, then it is fantastic CGI, and money well spent.

Zodiac had all the necessary ingredients for a wicked political thriller but failed miserably IMO.

My personal favorite is Dirty Harry because it shows many of the parts of San Francisco with which I am most attached. It was, obviously, based on the Zodiac case so the similarities are there.

Bullitt is also very good and some of the areas have changed so much so as to make it almost nostalgic.

The movie was set in 1930s San Francisco. Some of the most interesting sets were of the Charles's home, though they were only used in the beginning -- the drive up to the home, the exterior shots including the SF skyline views from the property and the Art Deco exterior entrance. I have never seen a residence with an entrance like that. I wonder if it was a complete fabrication, a set based on reality or a real entrance. There were also scenes set in the homes of what can only be described as SF aristocracy - they were supposed to be old fashioned old money -- and also a great nightclub. Other scenes were in seedy hotels and apartment buildings. Since the film was contemporary rather than a period piece, I assume it got the feel of the city down pretty well.
