Gray suit - shirt, tie and shoes

Gentlemen,

Hate to ask this kind of question yet another time, but in the similar threads I found the suits were usually a different shade, pinstriped or plaid and the folks wearing it had quite a different skin tone from mine, so here I am.

Anyway, I've got a wedding coming up next week, and I've been so caught up in my uni work I neglected to think what to wear. Actually, I think I should have got the suit fitted too, but that's another problem. Moving on - I'll come clean - I'm pretty much lost regarding what to pair the suit with.

I'd like to go with brown shoes. Not too sure on the tone, though. Maybe cognac? Or a tad darker (the colours in the photos are moderately accurate, so feel free to make any suggestions). I do have one problem, though - it's been next to impossible to spot some oxfords where I live (the old continent). I don't know why, really. I suppose my budget should be the equivalent to $150, although I seriously doubt I'll be able to find any specific models you suggest. They would be great as pointers, though.

Now, the shirt + tie. I've read about lavender and navy being a nice combo (shirt / tie). I've also heard white shirt and maroon tie. And light blue and purple too. Personally, I'm quite fond of cold purples (and, oddly, I've been seeing a lot of it lately), but don't let that weight too much on any suggestion. Oh, some examples would be lovely!

And I believe this is all. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

General rule: Blue with grey, Grey with blue; so go out and get a blue tie. If you prefer purple, go for that. Purple is not my thing, but that's me. I think the white shirt in the photo is just fine, but a blue stripe or check would be a nice change of pace. Try pink if you are feeling adventurous. On shoes, I would really have to see it. I (and I know I am in the minority on this forum) prefer black with most greys, especially light grey. On tailoring, I do think the suit needs some, but it is not a disaster.

^ agreed in general. I generally wear a light grey like yours with black shoes and belt. I think the white shirt is most formal, whereas anything beyond a crisp plain blue, pink, purple, etc and a venture into checks or stripes could become to casual... As for tie color, personally I would wear a darker shade tie with that white shirt and light suit, otherwise it all becomes washed out. Think about navy, maroon, dark green (maybe with brown shoes/belt), or even just black tie with white/black pocket square if you're feeling funky.

What kind of suit is that? Where did you get it? I needed a gray suit in a hurry and could only find pinstriped...

Thanks.

A black or dark blue tie would work well with a suit like that and a crisp white or lightly striped shirt.

Haha I wasn't expecting to find one (let alone two!) defenders of black shoes in this thread. I'll end up following your advice, though - spotted some very nice black oxfords today

As for the shirt + tie combo, your guidance is sound too. I'll look for the navy tie and a nicer shirt tomorrow.

Lastly, socks and (a funky) pocket square. I've got a pretty good idea what to get sock-wise, so no issue there. The pocket square is another issue. That's uncharted waters, as far as am concerned.

Oh, and thanks!

It's from Decenio - an Italian (yeah right) brand produced in Portugal. They're quite nice, actually, although they're not the cheapest.
