how gray should dress pants be when wearing a black sport coat? darker or lighter gray? (post pictures)

Don't wear a black sportcoat in the first place.

Gray slacks and a navy sportcoat is a better option.

Medium to light gray. Golden tan gabardine can work too. Black and white checks (houndstooth, glen check) with an accent color or two can also look good though you risk being taken as wearing a stroller unless your jacket has metal buttons. But I don't really care for black odd jackets particularly well.

Yea, in the non-SF world people like black. Dark dress shirts are also approved.

My only gripe with wearing a black SC is that at night you get washed out, especially if you are at a dimly lit venue. Same goes with a navy SC, and besides most true navy SC are black to most people at well (oh nice black jacket! --it's navy --oh, whatever).
