I do better with an 8.5E than the 9D. My left pinkie toe can definitely feel the difference. Might be related to where my toes are placed - my HTB measurement is a full size larger than my heel-to-toe size.
I have not tried Grant Stone in 12D yet, but 11.5E Brass/Ottawa were first boots ever that were not impinging my left pinky even a little.

Although I believe that 'half size down and up from D to E' change moves widest part of the boot CLOSER to the heel, so technically that is a change in direction opposite to what you desired.

I have seen mentions that for some people their 'normal' D size ends up having more heel slip than 'down' E size. That is pretty weird considering that E size supposed to have slightly wider heel, but I guess there are many variables affecting heel slip, and given unique shape of every foot it is impossible to predict how heel slip will be affected when moving between 'alternate' D and E sizes.

Yeah, I find that 10.5D has more heel slip than 10E in my case. So heel width is sometimes not a big concern verses the length of the boot and how well the rest of the boot fits. A locked-down instep will do more to prevent heel slip than a narrow heel counter, which may lead to discomfort.

Been trying different laces for the green cap toe boots, and settled on the 4mm olive ones from Laccico. The whiskey color works pretty well, but I prefer a quieter, softer green look.

Edit: And while I'm here, does anyone own both the minerva and tan Essex leathers? I'm curious to know which one would be softer and less stiff?

Wish me luck everyone I decided to use the sale price for the British tan LWBs and got a 9 D and a 9.5 D to compare. Better fitting one stays.

Brannock 9.5 D

I can personally say that 8EEE Leo feels good to me, but 8.5E was unbearably tight on my instep. It probably has a lot to do with how much volume you're packing.
Thanks for the feedback. What is your brannock size?

I can alternate between an 8.5D and an 8E on the Leo last quite comfortably. the difference in the sizes is quite negligible.
Thanks. Are the 8E smaller in length and heel area than the 8.5D while retaining the same width art the toes?

What shoe polish do you recommend using for the Navy Chromexcel Diesel's? I was thinking navy Saphir but the "navy" Chromexcel isn't actually navy, it's a mix of blue and green.

Length wise yes , it is a trifle shorter. Heel width I haven't found a perceptible difference in.

I don't think you need coloured polish unless the CXL leather is deeply scuffed and you want to cover it up with coloured pigment. A neutral conditioner such as vsc is good enough to restore shine and luster.

Tan Essex definitely much softer between the two. Although I only have the Saddle Tan Minerva, it may be more or less the same. Minerva stayed firm even a year later, became comfortable in its own way. I have not worn my tan essex as much but it felt mushy and softer than some chromexel for a first impression.

Snap of saddle tan after some cleaning a while back:

Interesting thanks. I wonder how the length/width/heel of the 8EEE compares to a 9D.

If I was in the USA I would just go crazy and order a few pairs and test.

I'm still breaking in the Brass boot in tan Essex and can attest to the softness of the leather and for as thick as the leather is, it's fairly pliable. I'm not sure about minerva but I'm finding Essex to be a little thicker and stiffer than my AE Higgins and Freeport in CXL.
