From the pictures I see of the shoe on actual people's feet, they look more brown than the oatmeal color of the studio pictures. Is there a trick to achieving this, or does it come naturally with wear?

I (used to) travel a ton, and I have learned to take them off. If I forget or whatever, I simply say there's steel in the boot construction. The word "shank" has never left my mouth in a million miles in the air over the last ten years.Might be a stupid question , but here goes.
For those of you who have gone through airport security checks with Grant Stone boots on - do you set off the metal detector each time and if so, how do you explain a metal piece "hidden" inside your boot to the airport personnel?

Generally, I'll travel in non-alarm shoes (sneakers or my AE chukkas that have a wood shank) and the GS shoes/boots are in the suitcase.

I AM the guy who mentioned a steel shank in my boots, when they set off the alarm. Had to explain boot construction to the rather unfriendly TSA person with a sidearm. Well, I'm not in the US so TSA pre check is inapplicable for me. But where I live, similar security restrictions would apply so I'll err on the side of caution and sneaker it through airport security.If you're TSA pre-check, it's worth it to not have to take off your shoes.
