I keep getting GQ even though I'm supposed to be getting Details, and it continues to piss me the **** off. The latest issue has a section on slim cut dress shirts. They discuss what to look for and show a "regular" button down next to a slim fit. For us to see the differences.

Then they show various pictures of models wearing $200-600 dress shirts. Well no ****, sherlock. I'm pretty sure if I pick up a ******* $554 louis vuitton dress shirt, the thing is gonna be pretty slim cut. And putting that next to a "standard" cut, $30 dress shirt is ridiculous. Who does this magazine help? Who does this article help? If I could afford a closet full of Prada and LV shirts, chances are I could afford a stylist to tell me what's right.

So freaking marsupialed I'm beside myself with annoyance. Where the article fails, can StyleForum let in on where to buy slim cut dress shirts? And not bespoke or tailored ones, but things the average person could find.

I'll start:
Polo
H&M

Slim-cut dress shirts do seem to be the exclusive domain of high-end brands. The cheapest probably, would be something like Ben Sherman which as it happens isn't "cheap" in the average person sense.

Of Polo, only the "custom fit" is slim, FWIW. All those others ("Yarmouth" "Blake" etc) are pretty standard. I've no first-hand intel on Purple or Black label RL.

I like Brooks Bros slim fits, but at a 34 in waist I don't really think "my" slim would be satisfatory for a truly lithe fellow.

For cheap stuff, Express typically has some reasonably slim offerings, as does H&M, Zara, etc. Quality's not great, but whatever.

GQ is wank material for Acqua di Gio-scented nascent date rapists who have freshly graduated from a life of L.A. Looks hair product and are looking to climb. It also conveniently positions one to talk inane "fashion" with girls wearing True Religion jeans.

Some mainline Polo models are slimmer than others, but I forget which.

Zara has slim stuff...so does BR as mentioned. BR's slim fits are not as slim as they could be. Brooks Brothers slim fit is regular fit. Their regular fit is fatass fit.

To be honest, just go custom. E-mail Shirtmaven, he can get you a great custom shirt for less than $120. I always get compliments on the shirts he made.

I have some slim fit shirts from Express (1MX), Zara and BR, but over time I've realized it's not a good look for me. The slim fits fit my torso fine, but I have a disproportionately large head (L-XL hat size on a M torso). I try to look for 'fitted' fits now (somewhere between classic and slim) to avoid making my head look like a balloon.

some reason I've found that shirts that specifically call themselves "slimfit" really aren't. Whereas brands that just are slim, and don't call themselves such, are where the good slimfit shirts are. *For me*, a slimcut shirt should have a 20" across chest, 18" across body and here's what I've worn/own that meet this criteria:

On the cheap side, Target's 'mossimo' vintage washed oxfords that they sell for $25 in size S

Ben Sherman "mod fit" shirts fit good and arent too expensive, $59 ea

Ralph Lauren polo "custom fit" shirts fit very well at $85

some Penguin shirts fit slim at around $90

On the higher but not ridiculously high range, Trovata size M shirts fit this way ($130)

as do Band of Outsiders shirts and Hickey Style shirts for a bit more ($150-250)

Duncan Quinn and agnes b shirts at $275 fit amazingly well

and on the highest cost of shirts I own, Paul Smith mainline size Med shirts fit ridiculously good, but are $$$$ at $400 ea

Hugo Boss is pretty slim. The Polo "custom fit" is also quite nice. You look like, if that is you in the car, that you have some chest muscles, this would, unfortunately, make you a tight squeeze into H&M and Zara in the chest, but worth a try. Express shirts aren't too bad if you get it from the right factory. I bought 3 colors once, each made in a different country, and only one fit (the one I tried on in the store).

I'm planning on ordering a jantzen shirt just to see what it is like.
