GQ + CFDA Names Robert Geller 2009's Best New Menswear Designer

Last night GQ held its second annual Best New Menswear Designer in America event at Rockefeller Plaza. The party was in honor of the six finalists — Rogues Gallery, Shipley & Halmos, Benjamin Bixby, Save Khaki, Robert Geller and Yigal Azrouël. As expected, the event was an assembly of the who’s who in the menswear business and much like last year, the collections were beautifully showcased in that oh-so-GQ aesthetic. After the presentation event, the selection committee (which consisted of “a panel of industry experts” — Thom Browne, American menswear designer; Steve Evans, the Levi’s brand VP of merchandising; Kevin Harter, Bloomingdale’s VP of fashion direction; Steven Kolb, CFDA executive director; Jim Moore, GQ creative director; and Jim Nelson, GQ editor-in-chief) worked to select Robert Geller as the 2009 winner.

The Geller stuff looked nice that night. I was a fan of what Yigal presented and also from Shipley + Halmos there was a really great silk duppioni dusty rose tux blazer.

Shipley + Halmos is the only one nominated that I would consider wearing myself, although I appreciate some of the others as well. I didn't even know of Yigal--I thought he did womenswear only. On an unrelated note, Steven Alan looks like a sexual predator in this ACL photograph.

From what little I have seen it seems like something I would like. Unfortunately they don't have much of an online presence, and I live in bumblefuck so I have little exposure to them. If I'm in NY this summer I might stop in to check out them out. How are their shorts?

I haven't tried on their shorts but might do so in a month or two when I'll need a new pair.

One of the big reasons I love the line is because it fits me. Their medium woven shirts fit me perfectly. They are slimmer than J. Crew medium shirts, slimmer in the chest, arms, and they have a shorter hem. Their khakis are also great, same for their t-shirts. I didn't shop there much this winter but stopped in a few weeks ago and saw that they were selling cashmere sweaters for the winter, and now they have cheap totes. Also, incredibly friendly staff and nice store on Lafayette.

Were they ever relevant as a fashion source? I'm not being smarmy--I'm actually curious if GQ was ever considered relevant.
