Got Mephisto shoes - Not sure about the fit. Any ideas?

I bought a pair of Mephisto casual sneaker-type . It has a high quality leather upper and a completely stiff, unbendable eva (rubber/plastic)-like midsole and outsole that "ride" like nothing I have ever felt before. Very comfortable. It's a marvel of engineering. It's extremely stable; each foot-strike is right on. The shoe is heavy; like twice as much as a regular sneaker. The problem is:

I tried the size that corresponds to the length of my foot. I could put my index finger between my ankle in the inside of the shoe with ease; barely touching the sides. That size had my heel slipping out but if I laced tightly was ok (but might slip out as walk for awhile). Otherwise a good fit overall.

The half size smaller has very little little slippage. I have to squeeze my index finger in between. If I'm standing it can be impossible. The fit feels good ; my longest toe is about 1/4 of inch or so from the end of the shoe. Not quite the standard thumb length rule. It does feel a little tight there and in the front.

These were expensive. What should I do? Keep the smaller size? Might that become a problem in the future?

As you know, every style shoe won’t necessarily fit every style foot. It could simply be their sneaker isn’t a good fit for you.
If you’re determined to keep, and with the info provided, I’d go with the smaller size.

I tried a pair and wanted them to work. I got them at Nordstrom which sells a lot of them. I followed the salesman's size advice which was to buy them a little larger than you think you need. After a lot of break in, I could not wear them. They just did not work on my feet.

I had a pair of Mephisto Rainbow, and can honestly say they were the most comfortable shoes I ever owned.

Almost daily wear for 3 and a half years until the sole finally wore through, but the uppers were still more or less like new, bar some light creasing.

Size wise I just went for my usual size and found them perfect.

I would go for the smaller ones if anything. Having said that, I do like to feel my shoes on, and generally go for a snug but not tight fit.
