I'm staying for a while in France (Lyon to be precise) and was wondering about what are the things worth getting that are either much cheaper in Europe or exclusively available here.

A lovely town. Quite heavy cuisine if one recalls.
There's an interesting Old Victory shop there (if that's the correct name?), like the one in Paris. And the usual French department stores.

Lyon is great, you´ll enjoy your stay !
If you are looking for high-end shoes, you have to check out Upper-Shoes. They provide everything from C&J to Pierre Corthay. The sales staff at Upper-Shoes is great.

You can get some really good deals on cashmere sweaters and scarfs in the UK/Ireland.

I don't know if there is anything that you can get in Lyon that you can't get cheaper in the US, except maybe some food and consmetic products that are made locally.

I'd visit the Carmina store in Paris if I were there, probably Arnys, Charvet, etc. Would also check out Bexley shoes and other low to mid range shoes that people mention here.

I want to take back some major purchases that will last a lifetime and remind of the trip, however.

will you be only in Lyon?

if I was looking for a "souvineer" type of purchase, from Lyon, I would probrably go with a kitchen product, myself. or, if you really want something that you are going to wear, get a tie or something like that. a small item to remember your trip.

if you are getting to paris, you may find a better selection of clothes that might make more sense to buy. I still can't think of more than 10 items in my wardrobe that I have from western europe, and most of those I bought while living there and when the dollar was stronger.

. My mother and I always took extra luggage for foie gras and nougat and stuff...

We still have menu from Bocuse's restaurant, signed by the chef himself.
