For THICK socks, Smartwool can't be beat. There are some European brands that are also nice (Bridgedale, Rohner - STP often has them), but these are all really meant for hiking. For use w/ dress shoes (maybe you want a slightly snugger fit, or want some padding) I've found Orvis' Invincible sock to be pretty good. They come in 3 packs (black, navy, dark gray, tan) and definitely take a licking...
