Just need to get away for a few days or a week. Kind of spontaneous and don't really feel like going through the effort to plan a group trip so I figured I'd just try going somewhere by myself for a change.

So, any suggestions for good places to vacation alone? Pretty much anywhere in the world is okay, I could take a few more days off if it's someplace remote, my only real requirement is that it must have great food, and I'm looking for something a little more on the relaxing side rather than extreme sports/outdoor activities.

I've traveled by myself quite a bit. Any big city is generally fine as you're bound to meet people. I had a great time in Buenos Aires, Munich and Paris by myself. The trick, I think, is to find someplace where the language barrier isn't too big of a problem.

Yeah, I'm single but am not looking for a crazy party scene on this trip. Just want to go somewhere different, have some good food, do some sightseeing, maybe get to talk to some interesting people. Mostly I want to relax.

+1

if you can go anywhere in the world, I'd hit a city in Italy like Bologna - excellent food, great walking around, save rome for a romantic trip.

I did Easter Island a few years ago alone, that was a blast.

Two years ago I spent two weeks traveling alone through Zurich, Paris, Marrakech, Madrid, and Barcelona. For the relaxing atmosphere, sightseeing, and good food you seek, I recommend Zurich.

Key West is great for relaxing, and traveling alone. The people there are very friendly and eccentric.

This is a good idea. I needed to get away and I went to Australia. I loved it. I was by myself and had a great time.

I have done a bunch of places in europe by myself.

Places I really enjoyed alone:
Lisbon!!!!!
Madrid
Lake Como (although this would also be an absolutely fantastic romantic getaway if you stayed in a hotel instead of the menaggio hostel)

Places that would have benefited from a friend or two:
Barcelona
Oslo (although this is mostly because it was so expensive and ( it felt like it was costing a lot of money to keep going)

Thanks for all the replies so far.

How would Montreal be for maybe 4-5 days? Is there enough to do there on my own or would it get boring?

not sure bologna without italian i think would be rather boring alone honestly( but i do not think much of northen cooking.) rome to be romantic... i do not see it but the may be a thing for people that do not have relatives that live in the said city.

Honestly, I find your love for Thailand so overwhelming.

If I like my home country about half as much as you like it here, it would help me forgetting how much I love the US with ease.
