I recommend Leffot. Steve Taffel also writes a blog at leffot.com. I have several pairs I've purchased from him: Edward Greens and Gaziano&Girlings.

There's also the Alden store on Madison Avenue.

There's a smallish shop near Macy's on West 34th St between 7th and 8th ave called Benedetti Custom Shoes. They have an ok selection of Alden, Allen Edmonds, Johnston & Murphy, Clarks and a few others. They almost always have a "buy one, get a 2nd pair half off" which isn't too bad. Other than the sale, the prices seem to be close to retail.

Not sure if that's the range of shoe quality and style you're looking for. Otherwise I've heard fantastic things about Leffot, but of course the shoes there generally come with a much higher price tag.

Leffot is great. Turnbull & Asser on 57th also has Crockett & Jones shoes.

I'm looking to spend somewhere between 300-400 on a pair of simple oxford type dressing shoe....and will be keeping it for years......so quality is definitely important.
