So, I'm not the only one with tie clips as a pet peeve? I guess it's like all the loafer hating guys here, for me a (visible) tie clip adds nothing of value to a good outfit. I do believe it's something more favored by Americans though, so maybe it's due to my European sensibilities.

It's a terrible North American thing used to jazz up bad ties.

why have a shiny metal crap on your tie? What purpose does it serve? I can only think of it being useful to waiters....

Quote:A tie bar / clip is both functional (and as @Sugarbutch keeps reminding us, there are several functions - keeping your tie in place when your jacket is undone being just the most obvious) and has some extra visual or simply personal interest - if it's of sufficient quality and worn properly. I will either wear them as part of a set with links when I am wearing a French-cuffed shirt, or simpler ones on their own when wearing a more Ivy / Mod / early 60s style. Ironically, most my best tie clips and cufflinks are Scandanavian, from the 1950s and early 60s, and are some of the nicest everyday mid-century design objects one can use in a normal everday way. You're really missing an opportunity to engage with some of the best of your own culture if you dismiss them as 'American'...

I used to use one from time to time on thinner grenadine and knitted ties that didn't have a back loop. It made a bit of sense. It's not to say that they can't be crafted nicely (mine looked quite elegant), but in most cases it's used improperly.

I can appreciate a good looking tie clip in itself, just not when it's worn (I actually own a couple of tie clips that sit at the bottom of my accessory drawer). For some reason, and this is coming from someone who doesn't mind a bit of peacocking, they make an outfit look a bit fussy IMHO. I'm fully aware that this is a question of personal taste though, and not the general SF approved "good taste". It's unfortunate in many ways that I don't like them, since many of my favorite posters are often donning them. I'm always trying to ignore them while enjoying the rest of the fit (Chocosa's latest fit comes to mind).

I always think "hipster" when I see a tie clip, and as such will not wear one for quite some time.

Thanks for your input. It definitely looks more brown in person than white as in the stock photo. It is summer weight FWIW but should be good all year in CA if I wear a coat over the jacket during fall-winter.

That said, I still don't have a solid navy/blue odd jacket and will keep an eye out for that.
