I love me some Mirror Pond. One of my favorite pales.

When I don't know any of the beers on a menu, I often choose by brewery. Favorites include DC Brau (local!), Heavy Seas, Dogfish Head, Bell's, and Lagunitas. What are yours?

    I remember beer...

I was fond of the output from 21st Amendment (and I also like cans more than bottles) when I wanted to pay attention to the beer I was drinking, but for everyday, shootin' the shit drinking, I drank Pabst. My favorite beverage, though, was a rye perfect Manhattan.

My only choice right now on the train is blonde or red. Went red...actually a decent beer.

Yours truly at the legendary Palace Bar, Fleet Street, Dublin, a few years ago:

All polished brass, dark wood, and mirrored partitions—steeped in literary tradition. And some truly fine Guinness, like the half-pint pictured.

    Cheers,

Favorite breweries (though I know I am missing some) - Dogfish Head, Firestone Walker, Stone, Allagash, Ommegang, Bells, Founders, several Belgians, etc. If it is not beer, it is good wine, scotch or the occasional gin or bourbon cocktail (enjoying a martini as a nightcap as I type).

Wow. This is turning into "Noodles' Good Natured Alcoholics' Thread"...

Clearly there are dozens if not hundreds of micro-breweries in the States these days. I was astonished to see an entire wall of craft beer at a bottle shop in Washington DC when I was there three years ago. The craft brewery movement had just started in Australia and I thought it was a purely local phenomenon, until my DC visit.

Out of the IPAs I've tried from USA, I favour Bridgeport. A close local (Australian) rival would be Little Creatures. Like Claghorn, I'm a big fan of Pilsner Urquell, although Budejovicky and Velkopopovicky Kozel run close. (There's nothing quite like ordering a Velkopopovicky Kozel and getting the pronunciation right...)

Another obscure but fabulous beer is Päffgen Kölsch, which I used to quaff when I lived in Cologne a very long time ago. At that time it was only available in two "Kneipe" in the whole of that city, one of which happened to be around the corner from my apartment.

Australia is lucky to boast a vibrant wine industry, and while most Aussie wine exports are blended rubbish from giant warm-climate vineyards, we do also have some incredible small-output labels which we mostly keep as a secret to ourselves. I'm a long-time collector of Mount Mary, Giaconda and Bass Philip (all Victorian cold-climate vineyards) but there are hundreds of fantastic Aussie wines to be had, with new ones coming up all the time. Just two weeks ago I drank a bottle of 1992 Grange Hermitage with a couple of buddies. That was a treat. You can read my review of the 2007 Giaconda Chardonnay here.

Then of course there's spirits. I love me a peaty Islay single-malt scotch - got some Laphroaig PX cask in the cupboard right now. For after-dinner finisher, a well-aged Armagnac or sometimes a Grappa. And if you can ever find it (because it's rare), do try Marc de Bourgogne, which is a little like Cognac but earthier and more rustic.

Well, it's only 4pm here in Melbourne and I'm stone-cold sober. But at least I can write about getting pished.

Alright, I'll have to wrap up the FC in 30 minutes from now. Anyone else want to participate?

I had to drive 70 miles today to find a (somewhat) legal bottle shop. All of this boozy talk is making me homesick.
