I used to think like that, but then I ended up with a closet full of things I had worn once or not at all. Recently sold some Epaulet blue Irish linen trousers that had been in my closet for over a year without me wearing them once. Clothing gets real expensive when it's $200/wear. Anyway, to each his own.

What's that? A suit made from such a high super number that it dissolves after one wear?

Black captoe oxfords that I will probably never, ever, wear outside of the next evening wedding I attend.

Then buy cheap ones, or second hand ones. They'll only have to last the evening, and it'll be dark so no one will know the difference. I wouldn't want to wear brand new shoes anyways, because breaking them in while dancing is no fun.

You could get Meermin captoes for about $250, and their lasts look great.

This is a good point. Now to see if logic and frugality? outweigh my current obsession with Carmina's Rain last.

Or just buy dark brown ones, so you'll wear them again. Or perhaps the navy Carminas that are on sale for $450. Polish them with black polish for the evening, and after the wedding with navy polish to lighten them up again. I suppose you won't wear navy either, if you don't wear black?

If it's for wearing with a dinner suit you could pick up some velvet slippers, they're much cheaper and you can wear them at home or as evening shoes to certain parties.
To be honest, I don't get dressing up extra nicely or buying special things for weddings. You don't want to be better dressed than the people who are actually getting married, it's their day to shine after all.

We are talking about blue donegal pants here. Something he can wear with grey jackets and some earth tone possibilities not a novelty purchase by any chance (textured blue not worsted navy). Don't want to rehash old arguments but the usual to each his own applies here.

I have that model in dark brown but will be wearing pretty much this exact shade of charcoal and tie http://www.voxsartoria.com/image/94458797083

I feel dark brown would not work well with the formality and colors of the ensemble. Those navy captoes are awesome ... and they have my size...

I hope it's OK that I barge into this thread. If those quarter-brogue Carminas were black, could they be worn in a black-captoe-only-environment? Starting new job Friday, I only have one pair of black Meermin captoes, and think it's a little dull buying another pair almost identical to the ones I have (they have a rubber soled black quarter-brougue like that one). Thanks.

Go for navy and buy a pair of black laces. Polish them darker for the evening, which works really well with navy, put in the black laces, and they'd look great. Then put in the brown laces, strip the polishing and polish them with navy shoe polish. Chances are the navy might be dark enough on it's own already, saving you the hassle.

Can't see why not. Don't go full brogue, but something like this should be fine.

To the extent it helps with your decision, it's raining in Chicago today.

They would be fine, but one piece of advice: hold off on buying another black captoe until after you start your job. New lawyers always think a law firm is a black captoe only environment, until they arrive and realize that is not the case.
