Not really sure how thin legs affect the drape of the pants, Noodles.
The SS experiement was good. I have leaned towards slim and very fitting suits and ended up looking foolish with narrow shoulders and big hips. I
This was made worse when I gained some weight.
Now, instead of shelling out $500 at SS, I would rather spend $2,000 on a Formosa in the fall. I want to have one nice fitting suit. I feel like SS would just hinder me. But when I have a few good solid staple suits, I will definitely get a suit or two from SS. I want to replace Zegnas with something better than Zegna, Formosas.
^ that really makes no sense to me. You have listed all your suits for sale as it is. Can you work from home every day all summer long?
You can't think of the SS suit we all like as a step down from Zegna. Try and get that out of your head. Same with cost. This is a fully canvassed suit that you will get a lot of use out of. And most importantly it looks great on you and feels very comfortable. Get the suit. And don't taper the pants.
Do you not wear suits to work every day? You want to replace all your suits, ideally you will want 5-10 suits. Get the suit. You've learned price doesn't always equate to quality. It looks good on you and feels comfortable. Get the suit. But don't taper the pants.
Get the suit, enjoy it, and still pick up one Formosa in the fall.
That's an ironic statement, Rudals. Consensus so far is, it's your best fitting suit yet. But rather than make such excuses (i.e. hindrance), just come out direct and say you have issues with the brand. Totally understandable and your prerogative IMO.
And FYI the La Spalla is fully canvassed and $1000
The la spalla is fully canvassed, has some handmade details, and retails for $999. Quality wise it's probably on par with zegna, or even slightly better. I do think Rudals has a point about rather having a Formosa, but it might very well be that a 40R Formosa doesn't fit him as well as this Suitsupply suit. You also run into problems when you sell all the Zegnas before the new Formosas are out, but seeing how slow the marketplace is, I highly doubt he'll sell his suits before then, if ever at this price.
I guess it all depends on whether Rudals wants to replace his zegnas slowly, or whether he wants to replace them all at once. 5 Formosas cost about 10k, while the 5 zegnas will probably sell for 2.5-3k max.
Good to know, thanks. I'm not really familiar with SS. Other than the fact Rudals needs to buy that suit.
At times, it seems noodles has learned nothing...
No worries, Sotiris.
Rudals, I'm sure you won't regret buying the La Spalla. I've tried it on myself, and while it didn't fit me as well as it did you (the chest and thighs are too slim for me), it felt like a very nice suit.
There's a .8" difference in the shoulders between a 38 and 40 Formosa, which means it might very well not fit you as nicely as this La Spalla. I hope it does, but I wonder what you'll do if that happens, stick with the Formosa, or go back to Suitsupply? Or just give up altogether?
Anyway, as always, it's up to you, we're just trying to give you a nudge in the right direction. You've improved tremendously already, so no need to beat yourself up over your Zegnas. We've all made costly mistakes, and as long as you learn from them there's nothing wrong with that.
I don't think Rudals is being completely unreasonable. If he's set on replacing his suits with Formosas and is willing to accept wearing suboptimally fitting suits until that's possible, there's no reason to spend the money on something he doesn't want, even if it is well fitting. He'll just have spent a bunch of money on SS suits and still be unsatisfied. Even if it's less money than the Formosas will cost, it's still a lot to spend on something he doesn't want.
(That's all assuming that he doesn't sell all of his current suits before he can replace them with Formosas.)
In an earlier part of the thread, there was talk of SS as the Target of suit sources. I wouldn't be surprised if this is still echoing in rudals ears. I think the characterization not accurate but I think everyone agrees that fit is paramount.
Rudals, @dirnelli is a member in Paris whose tumblr you can look up. He has many bespoke suits but he happily wears Boggi because they fit him well. Boggi is in some ways the Italian SS without the global reach. Probably half canvassed too?
you look good and your closet is big enough for more than one well fitting brand.
I will try to clear up some misunderstandings that we may have here.
- I do NOT look down upon Suit Supply nor do I think Zegna is the best. However, I did think the opposite when I didn't know any better.
- Here is a simple answer to why I would not buy any suits from SS right now:
I want to begin by build my suit collection with some "NICE" suits. To use a football analogy, I want to acquire Tom Brady or some future HOF player before I even start thinking about acquiring undrafted players.
- The plan right now is to just bite the bullet and get rid of all my suits. I will start a savings fund for my suits. I will most likely get 2 Formosa suits when they restock, regardless of whether I can sell my Zegna suits or not. Then I will start looking at SS suits. When I get the 40R Formosas, I will post pix and will ask for feedback before taking it to the tailor. If the Formosa isn't not a good fit, then I will consider SS.
I really hope I do not come across as some stubborn brand whore or arrogant jerk who looks down on SS.
Ehm, yes well, enough of this banter.... Now go buy an SS suit that you can wear while you're waiting for your beloved Formosa's to restock
This haha, sorry Rudals but seems true.
This also. Let's not forget that SF sometimes tends to exaggerate things and if certain group doesn't like SS there a bunch of other guys that follow them and think that SS is bad. When I bought my first SS jacket I was surprised with some details, that you don't get in Zegna's, and the fit was nice so I'm really happy with them. I just really wish they bring some fits in L length. The trousers suits are way way way too slim for me so I can only buy from them jackets. But IMO if the SS jacket I bought were Zegna it would have cost me $45,000 pesos just because it is Zegna.
I would get the SS if it fits well and use it as your daily beater, save and get the Formosa too. Then maybe you can go bespoke and it's fine but you have to start somewhere. Now, as kulata says and it's a valid point, if you don't like SS, Rudals, because maybe you feel it is cheap, just say it and no problem with that.
Yeah. But right now, it's the 2014 draft, and Tom Brady isn't available until 2015. Would you refuse to draft anyone? Now, if buying the SS now would preclude the purchase of a Formosa in a few months, that's different.
I think I did just say I think of SS as a step down from Zegna.
