It is a bit, and that's probably why I like it as a dress shirt. Even a pattern that resolves to solid at distance gives a little warmth and texture somehow. However, I picked it mainly because the blue wasn't navy.

    Ok. It's a split between 1 and 3

He ordered a green pindot a couple of pages back. Burgundy is his next must-have, but a navy upgrade is also on the list.

    yeah right, got there now.

For the shirts... hard to say. depends on what he has.
I think shirts matter more in fit, collar, etc. and he is in a suit so i guess there's not that much to think about. Unlike ties that really stand out and make a difference.
oh and i don't have a burgundy tie not sure i will. don't you think he needs a darker brown?

I like shirt #1. Here is why...

Equality in stripe size, not too much white, as I think is the problem with 3. If those blue stripes were evenly spaced on 3, I'd like it better, but still not as much as 1. I have a couple like number 1, in a similar shade, and also in lighter shades, in a few different weaves. They are more versatile than they look on a hanger.

Edit- looked at it again. I see that the blue stripes in number 1 are slimmer than the white stripes. I would like it better if they weren't. In that case, it is a closer call between 1 and 3, but I still like the width of the stripes in 1 better.

You'll grow to hate shirts 2 & 4. Shirt 3 will be the easiest for you to integrate into your wardrobe. I like Shirt 1 the best, but it is quite a bit bolder and so you will have to be more careful with your tie choice.

Great feedback, HF. With all the solid ties that I have then I guess I won't have problem with shirt #1.

You will. You will put it on with a navy suit and a solid blue tie and realise something is missing. Whereas when you put #3 on with your navy suit and your new green pindot or burgundy neat, Styleforum will elevate you.

Rudals, since you are a suit guy, you should really go for striped shirts that have more white than whatever other color is in the shirt, since suits are more formal, and shirts with higher white ratio are more formal. Since you are beginning, you should only be looking at blue and white striped shirts.

That being said, shirt 3 is where you need to start, that will be the easiest one to use without failing, and then shirt 1 would be next. End of debate. ;)

Interestingly enough, I just bought two almost identical shirts to 3 and 1, myself. :)

IIRC one of the shirts you picked up from Washington is similar to 3?

Also, if you ever pick up a charcoal suit, #1 will dominate

    Clags,
Both #1 & #3 were picked up from Washington. At least they're very similar if not identical. Maybe this was a futile exercise.
