Well, Wall Street and Ivy League campus (loafers) vs. Beatnik vibe (chalsea boots), I choose beatniks any time.

Loafer is a slipon indoor shoe in essence and is just plain wrong. Summer, sockless OK, with suit and socks, wrong!

Looks like we have yet another poster who likes arcane rules and over-generalizing without regard to either personal preference, context or regional cultural differences.

    Welcome!

Simple formula: if you wear more sportcoats than suits, loafers are essential.

I don't think anyone was advocating loafers with suits, except PCK with the bizarre data point about tassel loafers on Wall St., as if this is intended to have greater significance.

Flawed formula. "Essential"? I wear plenty of sports coats and don't own a single pair of loafers (unless you count the suede driving shoes I wear as house slippers). I manage to avoid going barefoot when so attired by selecting from a diverse series of derbies and chukkas.

Does it make me weird if during the autumn and winter I wear chukkas or derbies, and in the summer I prefer loafers? And that I covet a pair of Chelsea boots to keep my oxfords from getting ruined in poor weather?
That I have many of the above in both suede and leather?

In other words, am I the only fucking guy here who will happily wear any and all of the shoes most would consider to be part of a classic shoe wardrobe?

Love loafers, chelseas, and chukkas. Love, all three of those is suede even more. With all that being said, I wouldn't wear any of those three with suits. I also would never wear most lace shoes without a suit like a lot of people on this site will do. Lace shoes (except suede or boots) look out of place in a casual outfit IMO.

Even this kind of suit, "off duty" so to speak?

Well, to each there own. I find certain suits to be more casual than certain jacket/odd trouser combos and have no problem wearing loafers with either. Or Chelsea boots (once I have them) with business suits in crappy weather.

Always exceptions. I wear loafers with my navy seersucker suit.

Edit: it is also the only suit I would wear without a tie, so I think it ties (no pun intended) into my original comment.

I wear loafers and chukkas with suits all the time...in both calf and suede.

I wear them with mostly casual suits...though on occasion I will wear a suede chukka with a dressier flannel or heavier weight suit.

And as far as cordovan tassel loafers go...you aren't part of the eastern establishment if you don't own a pair that you've had since college.

With business suits...I think in most cases loafers are not appropriate. But black and burgundy tassel and penny loafers are frequently seen with suits...and I like this look. It works well.
