And I stopped for religious reason as well. "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery." (Ephesians 5:18).

It's a good thing Paul hadn't heard of bourbon...

I don't drink, I still go to and enjoy occasions where others drink.  But I do find that I tend to go home a little earlier.  Not early, just earlier.  When I drank I was usually the last to realise the lights were on and the security guys were looking at me anxiously...

This has been my experience as well.

Sometimes I drink water just to throw my liver a curveball.

Thankfully I dont think I've ever been recognized. Though I guess it's not a bad thing. I might act confused for ***** and giggles.

The why: I cannot control my drinking and it was harming me. Moreover, I wanted to be a responsible husband to my wife by staying alive. And I stopped for religious reason as well. "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery." (Ephesians 5:18).

Shoot, people have expectations when you come from a family that has had 3 generations of ministers.

When I was a teetotaler (until I was about 30) the two most difficult things for me were (a) convincing people that I was enjoying myself even though I wasn't drinking and (b) trying to avoid making others feel bad because I wasn't drinking and they were. So many people wanted there to be an important reason why I didn't drink (was my dad an abusive alcoholic?, did I know someone close to me killed by a drunk driver?, did my religious beliefs prohibit me from drinking?) when the simple truth was that I had never tasted anything I liked and I was totally wary of the loss of self-control that came with drinking.

Once I did start to drink a little bit, it no longer felt right to say, "no thank you, I don't drink" when turning down an offer of a drink. Instead I started to say, "no thank you, I don't drink much."

If I had known how quickly the addition of that single word ended the conversation about drinking, I'd have used that all through college and avoided a lot of awkward conversations!
