Wide chest + small waist + short arms = can't touch anything SuSu lol.

Working buttonholes make them near nonstarters for me.

From your statement I gather that a black grenadine is a fairly formal tie? Funny, since it seems somewhat close to a black knit which I have characterized as casual. Does it make a difference whether it is grenadine grossa or fina?

In the UK black grenadine is a popular funeral tie. E.g.:

Keep in mind that grenadine is woven, not knit. At a conversational distance it would never be confused with a knit.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have a Havana and Lazio that fit reasonably well. But good advice, I'll go see if they have it in the Toronto store.

Yes, I regard black grenadines as quite formal in nearly every context (fina more so than garza, but not so much that a garza is a casual tie). In general, I think grenadines ties are quite versatile, but black is such a formal color than only the most informal of knit ties can "casualize" it for me.

Would you wear a black grenadine to a funeral?

@justinkapur, for the only (or first) tuxedo, I would recommend peak lapel, single button, grosgrain facings with matching cummerbund. Given what we've seen of your choices, midnight blue is not too much of a stretch for you.

Me? I would and have worn a black garza fina to funerals. It's my go-to tie for those events.

    Just an open-ended question.
I would wear a plain twill silk.

If I wore a black grenadine to a funeral, I don't think I could ever wear it in other contexts.

I hear you. Funerals are about all I wear mine for. I go silver grenadine or gray shepherd's check to weddings but the OP said he didn't want silver/gray.

I just wanted a tie that would work for other purposes as well. Not particularly funerals.

There is a contingent that advocates black grenadine with tan suits and the like, Bond-style, but I haven't tried this one in real life.

Do it. It won't hurt you or have any lasting effects on your health. :)

Cox: you're a physician practicing in the world's wealthiest country, right? It's your reason overpowering your passions and that cannot be healthy can it.

Australia the world's wealthiest country? Hardly. Our currency is in freefall, economy bordering on recession. Wages are high but so is the cost of living. Try buying a house in Melbourne or Sydney these days - prices are beyond ridiculous.

I'm doing ok but at some point I have to draw a line in the sand. I also have no space left in my wardrobe, and a B&Tailor commission on the way. So no Sartoria Formosa for me this time.

However - I've just wish-listed a lovely pair of Vass shoes from NMWA. They are discounted, I've always wanted some Vass, and pending Greg's PM reply to confirm that they can be delivered in time, this will be a nice consolation purchase in lieu of an SF suit.
