I learned from this experience. Pay attention to the measurements.

Playing Devil's advocate: Hasn't the intended lesson been to buy things that best suit him, rather than settle for the less-than-ideal? SF-approved items that don't suit are no better than NM items that don't suit, IMO.

    Good point, DocH.
But before we call this purchase a failure, let's see it against a jacket that has wider lapels.

Indeed, that's why I advised Rudals to go into town and try lots of different suits from different brands (not just Zegna/NM), so he can get a better idea of what suits him. He shouldn't go on a buying spree, but go home after, think about what he likes, maybe discuss it on here, and then buy one suit a week or two later.

And after Noodles has worn that suit for a while, maybe a month or so, he should be able to see more clearly what he likes and doesn't like about it, and then buy another suit according to his more refined eye. That would be the first step in developing his own style. I'd advise the same process for ties, or any article of clothing for that matter. Buying sprees hardly ever work well.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's terrible. But a lot of SFers have ended up with jumbled wardrobes because they bought items that were good enough rather than just plain good. You don't need to do that.

If you dig it with wider lapels, great. But I'd urge you to give it a hard look and decide if it's your preference -- to your taste -- rather than keep it because it could be worse.

    Wise words, DocH and MF.
Honestly, I thut standard meant that it wud be standard width for me. I can clearly see that it is wide. I appreciate people pointing that out, as well as suggesting wider lapel jacket to complement it.

MF, I will never buy a suit online unless I have had prior experience. I usually dont buy clothing online. I agree wwith ur method of buying one from a store then thinking about what I like and dont like for my next purchase. I am not making another $4,000 mistake again.

Ouch, is that how much Zegnas run for? You could've gone bespoke for that, or buy about 8 Suitsupply suits!

that right there is a good lesson.

yes i would say so, the ideal is certainly not to settle for good enough. i would put this tie right between good enough and just right. it it wasnt shipped from italy and commissioned to his specifications, id sooner say to return. although the design of the tie itself is quite nice and a step up from a lot of his early ties.

LOL - it was actually an Isaia suit with 2 Tom Ford ties. SF is saving me a lot of money.
I am going to do as you guys have said. Go to the stores, take pix, and get everyone's thoughts.

Don't overthink it. Try on a bunch of makers and see which ones highlight your best attributes. Since you're slenderish probably Italian more than English, for starters.

It's not as hard as you think it may be.

Honestly, part of your problem might be your non-stop posting here, looking, and thinking. Give it a few days to sort of sink in. You'll end up talking and thinking in circles if you don't come up for air.

And after you've found a nice maker or two that fit you well, then you can start to focus/learn the appropriate fabrics for seasons. That part is easier than a good fit because most of that stuff is pure common sense rather than developing your eye.

Let's settle this new tie issue once and for all.
Please observe below for the jacket that has the widest lapels in my closet. I actually love it! I am perfectly fine with its width. And I also happen to have one more that has the same width. We're done with this. Let's move on...or I can move on now.

This tie has the same width. I never had problems with this.

Noodles are you unable to button all of your shirts? What the heck is going on with the top button on all of them?
