Can anyone recommend me a good book store in Manhattan? Perhaps something other than a B&N or Borders?

Good for what?

The Strand is the gigantic used book emporium.

Printed Matter is good for art books.

The Housing Works Book Store in Soho has a nice environment.

Spoonbill & Sugartown on Bedford Ave is good for art books too.

I like McNally Jackson on Prince st. Also close by is Shakespeare Books on B'Way and Waverly, i believe, and if you head north on B'way you will run into the Strand.

Baumans (sic?) on madison has some interesting rare and signed editions. There is also a place in the west village whose name i can't recall which has the same.

Abebooks is very good for used books.
Both are open 24 hours.

If you order a used book from one of the secondary sellers on amazon you're often dealing with Strand. I once found an almost perfect condition out of print Guy Bourdin book that was missing from my library that way and these Strand fuckers shipped from London even though the location said NYC.

I like that Japanese book store across the street from Bryant Park. The store is on 6th ave between 40th and 41st. You should go there.

I dont remember the name of the store, however........
