In retrospect it reads like a shill for Bloomingdales, but I posted my experience on "the same" RL Polos from Macys vs Bloomingdales here http://www.styleforum.net/showthread...es#post2568067 Others had lots of input to, in the end YMMV.

For tailored clothing, look for place of manufacture. Italy is a good sign.
For other stuff, avoid logos and look for the fine details -- quality of buttons on a shirt, etc.
Really, you're better off learning to recognize the hallmarks of nicer clothing in general. Ralph's hugely variable. The less expensive stuff is often mediocre, but sometimes the more expensive stuff is too. And sometimes you find gems in the rough.
