Golf Pants?

I've been noticing a lot of pants on ebay and elsewhere that are labelled as "golf pants." At first glance, most of them look like nice cotton dress pants.

Would these be appropriate to wear at the office? How would they compare to regular cotton dress pants?

They probably aren't very different, seems to me to be a marketing ploy. If they fit you well and look good, you should have no problem substituting them for standard trousers. I've seen some "golf pants" that are made of lighter, purportedly more breathable/moisture-wicking fabrics, or which have an extra pocket for a pencil or something, but nothing too noticeable. A lot of tour pros just wear nice worsted wool trousers, no need for specific "golf pants".

I wore a pair of Docker's "golf pants" to work today. I wouldn't say they're exactly styling, but they look like standard khakis to me and they work in a pinch. The right-hand pocket is 'doubled,' and that's the only significant difference I can see.

some of the golf pants I have had had a bit of rubber strip along the waistband to help hold in your shirt when your swinging your arms around.

They usually also have a double pocket on the right (keep your glove separate) some times they also have a smaller pocket inside of one of the pockets to keep your tee's in.

I always thought that golf pants were those pants that you were expected to wear stuck into your socks, like Tintin. I don't know where I got this idea from, but this is how I always imaged them. Didn't golfers wear such pants in those good old days when golf was still an excusive sport and when those who played golf were those who also changed to dinner jacket for dinner?

Yup, people always imagine golfers wearing plaid plus-fours and argyle socks, with a sweater vest to match.

I've seen cotton poplin trousers advertised as "golf pants". They're smoother/lighter than chinos and come in pastels, generally.

(Incidentally, when was it that slacks and polo shirts displaced plus-fours and argyle socks?)

+1...most recent designs has wider back pockets to accommodate yardage books and a little triangle cut at the hem for styling...I have a few "golf pants" made by Zanella that I wear on (with clients and work bigwigs) and off the course.
