Going without socks

So, I've gotten a new pair of boat shoes, and they really look best without socks. I'd really like to wear them without socks, but how does one go about dealing with foot sweat? I really don't want to damage my shoes, and I don't want anyone to smell my sweaty feet. (If it matters, I am going to wear my shoes with shorts)

Boat shoes are the only shoes I ever wear without socks - for some reason my feet don't really perspire in boat shoes - maybe because they are so breathable? But dress shoes, sneakers - fuggetaboutit.

Why don't you wear the footsie socks, the super low socks that in essence, when worn, looks like you are not wearing socks.

My boat shoes are unlined and have been comfortable without socks. They are the only shoes I wear sockless.

Just go for it. Boat shoes are generally impervious to odor if they are all leather. If you have problems, try some of those inserts (Dr. Shoals or something) that are supposed to soak up the sweat (or something).

Right then, I guess I'll get some powder, or inserts(whatever is available), and go from their.

The Sperry Topsiders I have are leather but have tiny perforations throughout the shoe that allow them to breath....my feet NEVER sweat in them. if you're interested, i bought them at Nordstrom... here's a link

I do not recall in my entire life seeing anyone wear socks with boat shoes...but I guess it must happen.

I'm sure you could find someone at a retirement home wearing boat shoes with socks.

I hardly ever wear socks with boat shoes or summer loafers; those little no-show socks (mentioned above) have been a wonderful invention.

Don't overdo the powder inside any shoe. That stuff can get trapped in there and start to stink on its own right.

Vox, this looks great. The Lobb's are sharp and complement the look nicely. I didn't know Lobb sold boat shoes until your post.

If you've got sweaty feet, there's only so much a sock can absorb before it's soaked through. A sock provides the shoe with minimal protection from sweat. For this reason I have no problem wearing certain shoes without socks.

just baby powder works well for me. Odor aside, it also keeps my feet from sticking to and pulling out the insole. try not to put powder in the shoe, just on your feet, so it doesnt clump and start shooting out the seams.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
