I will be going to Europe at the end of July for vacation. My trip will take me to Italy, Switzerland, and end in France. I was curious to know if any of the top tier brands sold in the U.S are cheaper over there. I was thinking along the lines of Borrelli, Loro Piana, Cucinelli and Zegna. Although I have been to these countries before, I hadn't previously done any clothes shopping there, so your input is much appreciated.

There are a lot of "brands" in Italy that aren't known in the US (maybe they can't be found here) that are pretty good quality. I'd go off the beaten path -- and look for stuff like that. I've done that for certain shirts and scarves and trousers. Lovely pair of trousers I picked up from a small shop -- don't know the name of it -- but the quality was superlative.

in a nutshell, any of the european designers or brands will be less expensive in europe than in canada or the usa by usually 20% on average (from my experiences) you also get the VAT back in each country provided that you purchase a minimum amount in each store and ASK FOR TAX FREE form at the time of purchase it varies by country (italy it is E155, france E175 and switzerland recently upped their minimum what i think is now CHF400 but the tax in each country is different so you may not get back as much in each country as the other (ie swiss tax is only 6 or 7% whereas it is around 20% in both france and italy) and it depends on what kind of goods you purchased as well) check out this website from globalrefund for current VAT amounts and refund infromation http://www.globalrefund.com/default.asp?viewSiteId=1

you have to take into account that most brands you are familiar with in the USA, although they do exist in europe, usually sell completely different stuff over here than what they "design" for the US market.
