Going from a 42R to a 40R?

I traditionally wear 42R suits, but I have a 34 waist. I like the slimmer fitting of a 40 jacket throughout the waist, but I need the shoulders/chest of a 42. Is it possible/ good idea to perhaps start buying 40R suits and just have the coat altered throughout the shoulders/chest and lengthen the sleeves?

Shoulders are unalterable. You sound like an ideal MTM client.

Perhaps a good tailor would disagree, but in my experience it is always easier and looks cleaner to have garments taken in than let out. I would buy the 42 since you need it for the shoulders and chest, and have them take in the sides slightly. That's a much easier alteration, it seems to me.

I do the same - buy for fit around the shoulders and have the waist taken in.

Altering shoulders is extremely expensive and doesn't always turn out right. Better to buy a suit with a correct shoulder fit and see if a tailor can take in the rest. Otherwise I would go MTM as well.

I'm a 42 chest but usually have to size down to a 40 to get the shoulders to fit. Usually works out pretty well.
