I seem to be getting it a lot lately. I shave in the shower, which is supposed to help, but makes little difference. I'm still getting little red razor bumps (on my neck), which is pretty unattractive. Any suggestions? I don't want to shell out for after shave, a different shaving cream (I use classic Barbasol right now), or any other treatment before I get a second opinion.

Google for "razor bumps", which usually is paired with razor burn. Razor burn can be solved by a good moisturizer, and I believe razor burns can be solved by exfoliating or some such before hand.

Are you sure exfoliating wouldn't just irritate my skin more?

Use a gel or cream rather than a foam. Aveeno Theraputic Shaving Gel is great. It'll cost you about $4 a can, but it's worth it. Most drug stores carry it. Failing in that, go to the Clinique counter in a good department store and talk to them. They have a great shaving cream. Both of these products are non-allergenic. Also, never shave against the grain. Also, I wouldn't shave in the shower. Shave after the shower. Beard will be softer, and you won't be rinsing off the beneficial mouisterizers in the cream. Shave, then wipe off the excess with a dry towel. The Aveeno site seems to be down. Here is another link, it's long -- hope it works... http://www.drugstore.com/products/pr...andFilter=7836

Buy proraso pre/post cream, and use it as an aftershave. It's cheap, and the jar will last you a year. See this review from badger and blade. I've been using it since june, and love it.

put hair conditioner in your beard and let it sit before you put on your barbasol. also, don't wash your face with soap before shaving----it removes the oils in your skin, thereby decreasing lubricity.

No, not if you exfoliate before you shave.

What is your shaving routine? What direction do you shave your neck? What razor are you using? Do you use a pre shave oil? What kind of facial hair do you have? Is it straight or curly, thick or thin?

Barbasol?

There's your problem right there.

That's about the crappiest shave cream out there. 1930s-era technology. It's what's health clubs buy for their men's locker rooms, which tells you everythign you need to know.

Invest in a decent razor and some of the therapeutic gels recommended upthread.

good advice! and what kind of razor do you use? less blades is better believe it or not. If you are getting bumps, I bet that's the problem.

You should get a nice shaving brush (or 2 or 3 or 7), a double edge razor(s), and an array of shaving creams and soaps of different brand and scent to keep from getting bored.

Ditto on after shave balms and scented witch hazels

Go to Shavemyface.com/forum

1. Register
2. Lurk around and pick up some pointers
3. Buy: a) A Merkur HD
b) this brush (unless you wanna spend more $:

http://www.pcfallon.com/detail.asp?p...eferer=froogle

c) Taylor's of Old Bond Sreet, Avocado shave cream.

After 6 months (at which point your technique will come into its own), you will have no razor burn or ingrown hairs, and you'll have MUCH BETTER shaves, and you will fall in love with shaving.

Guaranteed.

I use a Mach-3 Turbo. I really don't see myself using a shaving brush and soaps... I'd rather get a really good shaving gel.
