Gmail: Why use it?

I see so many people with gmail accounts these days. Why use it over a popper?

For me:
-Web-based (access anywhere).
-Groups ongoing exchanges into one conversation.
-Low on spam.
-I was able to obtain the most "professional" private email address for my name.

I check my gmail using pop3. I like the online archive of all my messages and Google's search tools are better than those in my email client. Also, it's free and currently 6.5 gb.

Is there any associated costs? I have a couple of domains registered and hosted with godaddy. Three domains, three years of services, all for $200. I tend to use my BB for checking email, so the handy webaccess is not a big deal to me.

Just trying to get a grip on gmail, thanks for the input so far. Would you say, at its heart, it's just like having a yahoo address?

I use it almost exclusively for the above reasons. My favorite feature is the use of google's search engine to find old emails. It also stores the email add of anyone you've ever written and anyone who has ever written you. Some may find the ads irritating, but I never notice them.

Gmail's search function is the best thing ever. That, and I like the clean, no-nonsense look of gmail. Very user-friendly, and minimalistic.

i used yahoo for a while and gmail is much much better. it is very easy to use and i really like the chat feature inside. +1 on the search engine being awesome at finding old emails.

It allows me to have my privacy violated quickly and all in one place. I'd have to spend hours a day clicking on offers for Free Smileys spyware to do what Google does just by reading and archiving all my personal email.

The search function is my favorite part of it, very effective. Being able to group conversations is a plus too.

Can someone give us a printscreen image of their gmail inbox?
I've thought about switching to gmail from hotmail for a more professional/mature email, even though I have a work email as well.

Just register your own domain through godaddy. A domain plus email and website = ~ $100 for three years, plus you control all email account names. What could be better?

True, but at $33 per year, it is next to free, plus you have a matching website. A very handy tool for things like posting your resume behind a password and also great for a personal calling card. What could be more professional than to have your email address be something like

[email protected]

or something similar? You can also make up various accounts to go with any hobbies or interests, plus make up spam accounts. I turn on and off my spam accounts as idiots put me in their email lists. You know the type, the ones that send 120 people a stupid joke with all 120 people's emails showing? I have a couple of offensive addresses I give out to those people and they often to not put me in their spam lists. Like "[email protected]". It works
