Glossy vs. non glossy leather briefcase?

Should I get a glossy or a non glossy (bare leather or vintage look) briefcase for things like

- Formal events
- Professional work as a lawyer
- Traveling on an airplane

Btw, how durable are glossy finishes on briefcases and how are they made? Are they polished leather or just some sort of glossy paint?

My advice is get a leather (non-glossy) saddle bag type. I've had mine over 25 years and it has held up very well, shows its scars (which legitimizes your presence), yet is rugged enough to go on for the next 20+ years (pass on to your kids, if any).

Briefcases are rarely appropriate at formal events.

- Professional work as a lawyer
- Traveling on an airplane

Typically, non-glossy. Although I suppose it doesn't matter a tremendous amount when traveling on a plane, train, boat, etc.

Since you're asking about "professional work as a lawyer," I'm guessing you're either a lawyer, or are at least on the way to becoming one.

If you're already a lawyer, surely you can look around and see what sort of briefcase is generally deemed desirable by your colleagues. Even if you're not yet a lawyer, if you're near enough to that point that you're figuring out which briefcase to buy, I'm guessing you occasionally come into contact with lawyers, and can, again, simply look and figure out what sort of briefcases they favor.

But in my experience, non-glossy is usually the way to go.
