I hate to state the obvious, but what about white or off-white? Oft-times, at least one element of an outfit must be mundane or low-key to allow others (such as tie) to be more prominent.

Also, maybe a white with very thin redish or orangish stripes, though I'd have to see it to be sure.

Even a light blue to complement the reds would look nice.

- White
- Light blue
- Very thinly striped shirt with white background. Stripes could be in a number of colours, but a very thin, narrowly-spaced red stripe would help to pick up the pattern.

The fabric pattern for the suit looks nice, by the way. Is the suit a three-piece?

I see purple and orange in the plaid, so you might try a shirt in lavender or peach.

But, judging by the picture, real problem may be that you are wearing your suit upside down.

Indeed, it appears the picture is upsidedown, but the colour vein is actually more cranberry red/reddish-orange - not a great digital camera. Do you think peach would still work?

It is a three piece yes, I really like bold plaids - no need to be too discreet! So even with an orange/red check blue could work? I have matched it with white but the white in the suit is more grey or ecru so true white is not a great match. I may try to avoid stripes, even faint, as I fear they will be going in a different direction to the check and work against it, may have to play it safe with solid colours.

I would only wear a micro-check with it, as a larger check would (in my opinion, at least) conflict too much with the scale of the check in the suit. That is also why I would prefer a very fine, narrow striped shirt.

To be honest, I wouldn't be so concerned about precisely matching colours. After all, if you were wearing a navy suit with a blue pinstripe, would you be concerned about precisely matching the blue of the stripe with your shirt? Most likely no.

Therefore, I think that it's more important to find colours that highlight the suit colours, or that complement the suit colours, rather than colours that match them.

Hi, I think you are definitely right about going for a microcheck and I think I shall most likely play it safe with an off white or cream or maybe a pale pink or salmon. Thanks.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
