I wish this brand would loosen up the fit and design larger collars. Seems like it's still reaching for the 2010's "classic" aesthetic, which is not where most style folks are anymore.

I was a big fan, had over 50 shirts. Now they're not something I ever reach for.

They actually do have a larger collar, they just don't offer it on any stock models. It's my understanding that their retail partners can order shirts in any configuration, so I don't know why it hasn't caught on with any of them.
I've gotten shirts with the larger collar through their MTO program. You can also order half sizes, which is nice.

That's interesting as Gitman was always talked about as having massive collars, sticking with a 3" collar. You'd want larger? Like 3.5"? I look at some Norse Projects collars and they look like that are .5".

A Meditation On The Nature of Fit (In Recognition of Heraclitus)

During the Gitman Vintage heyday of 2010 – when I was much younger and much thinner – their shirts never worked for me, due to the sleeves never being long enough for the sizes that fit my torso at the time.

In 2020 I delved back in head first and picked up a bunch of makeups for Frans Boone. I think by this point Gitman had adjusted their pattern to have wider shoulders/longer sleeves, as these fit me in that respect, if not a little tight in the torso.

A couple years into the pandemic and I had outgrown all of my FB x GV shirts. I tried some similar makeups for FB in a size larger, and although briefly deceived, found these, also, did not fit. I again wrote off the brand, but kept two non-collaboration, "regular" GV oxfords I had picked up along the way, which were more forgiving than the FB makeups (I think FB makeups might be slimmer than standard GV).

However, after a bit of weight loss (barely), and not being able to locate a suitable alternative for "casual" buttondowns, I rediscovered the brand yet again, as I now found my extant XLs to fit me quite well.

Recognizing that Gitman had changed their fit since my extant pair were manufactured, I recently ordered a few additional shirts in XXL, only to find that these fit smaller than the XLs in many respects. While more accommodating in the torso, they're shorter in the sleeves and overall length. Further, I've found that between XXLs, and fabrics, there is noticeable variance. Case in point the Imogene + Willie collab shirt I just received, which is shorter yet in sleeve and body length.

And so here I sit, left to reflect on the significance of my body's vicissitudes over the years and the ephemerality of fit.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
