I think 80% of their stock is past season and old stock (stuff that didn't sell). 20% is defects/rejects.

That not actually true anymore. about 90% of their stock is current season. I just learned abotu this myself. Attached is a good articale that explains how they are set up now and where their supply comes from.

A Lot of their products are manufactured to order. I used to sell a ton of products to them every year.

There was an interesting interview with the TJX CEO in this article.. Looks like someone already linked it but here's what she said.

She says 85% of what the stores sell is from the same season and same year it was designed for, and 85% is purchased directly from manufacturers. Much is identical to what the brands sell in department stores, she insists. Less than 5% is irregular.

But there is an interesting sort of denial associated with these brand/off-price relationships
...

"We're absolutely fine with every vendor saying they don't do business with us," Meyrowitz says. "It's a very important part of our relationship."

Seems true in my experience.

Can anyone identify this price tag? I'd say 90% of the awesome stuff at my Marshall's has this same tag. Is it Bashford? Barney's?

Wilkes Bashford had satellite shops in Carmel, CA and Mill Valley, CA but both were closed in 2009.
In November 2009 Mitchells/Richards/Marshs of Westport, CT acquired the bankrupt Wilkes Bashford company for $4.6 million. Shortly after the purchase by the Mitchells, excess inventory began to appear at Loehmann's. There were also a series of warehouse sales to rid the company of accumulated inventory.

Wilkes always had a policy of holding on to inventory for several seasons before putting it on sale. (often long past it's appeal) The Mitchell's, on the other hand, tend to sell off, at sales, all seasonal merchandise at the end of each season.

The Mitchells have been tweaking the inventory at Wilkes trying to find the right mix for the Bay Area. So, if you are seeing their merchandise show up at close-out stores like TJ Maxx, it may simply be that they are converting buying errors into cash as they continue to experiment with the San Francisco marketplace or simply eliminating certain brands entirely from their store.

Paisley thing at each end. The coloring is off so the actual design is a much darker brown and the scarf itself is black. I do think its supposed to be a men's scarf because of the length etc. The print kind of kills it for me, but if they really hate it that much they can just sell it or something.
