I've recently become a huge fan of gingham shirts and own one each in blue, red, pink, purple, aqua, and rust brown (and I have a green gingham check linen shirt on the way). They nicely bridge the business and casual worlds, i.e. the pattern is business appropriate, but the right color (especially the non-primary colors) is good for social occasions. Particularly on days when I'm going dancing after work, a gingham shirt hits just the right note in the office and on the dance floor. IMO, the blue, red, rust brown, and perhaps purple could be appropriate in Fall/Winter, but I restrict the others to Spring/Summer. The red can be hard to wear without looking like a kitchen tablecloth, but it helps that the pattern has a very small check.
The easiest tie to pair with a gingham shirt is a solid grenadine, from the same color family as the shirt (e.g. a navy grenadine tie with a blue gingham shirt).
