What does anybody know about this England house? Are they any good? They sound like a traditional old Savile Row joint, but is that just marketing to "seem" like one?

How old are they and how has their quality improved/decreased?

I ask because I just got a Gieves-&-Hawkes-tailored overcoat from the 50s on Ebay.

If it's from the 50s, it can only be Gieves or Hawkes; the two firms did not merge until the 70s ('74, I think).

The quality of work from either house from that era is bound to be very high. How well it has been cared for is another matter.

As to G&S today, they have a number of lines, including the largest RTW operation among all the traditional SR houses. The bespoke product is a small part of the business, expensive for what you get, but by no means bad. I have never been a fan of their house cut, however, which combines SR flair (square shoulders and nipped waist) with minimalism (narrow lapels and other details) in what strikes me as an odd way.

You're right, Manton - I just reread the listing and it's Gieves.

From the pictures, I t looks to be well-preserved. It was by-order for a Squadron Leader of the RAF. So, in a few weeks, we'll see.
Thanks.

I second the opinion of high quality from that era.

I have a suit and two jackets from more recent days and was surprised to find they were made in the US. IIRC, the production for US goods was outsourced to Hickey-Freeman (I hope someone will set me straight if in error). That said I am still pleased with the quality and cut.

That's quite a dramatic coat. Be sure to post a pic of you wearing it when you get it. Congratulations!

That's an exciting find, Augusto86. immsmc, Gieves was something of a specialist military tailor prior to the merger with Hawkes. So your coat might be quite interesting. I'd like to see pictures too.

saw this Thrifting today, it's a very nice Charcoal DB peak lapel suit with pants.
Anyone know if this is RTW or bespoke?

I'm a bespoke client, and a very contented one at that! Expensive though...
